Proper preparation is key to a safe and enjoyable track day. This guide covers everything you need to check and prepare before heading to the circuit.

Vehicle Preparation

Essential Safety Checks

  • Brakes: Minimum 50% pad life, no scoring on discs, firm pedal feel
  • Tyres: Minimum 3mm tread, no damage, correct pressures (check hot pressures on day)
  • Fluids: Check and top up oil, coolant, brake fluid, windscreen washer
  • Battery: Securely mounted, terminals tight
  • Wheels: Torqued to specification, no damage
  • Lights: All working (required for road driving to/from venue)

Recommended Upgrades

While not essential, these improve safety and performance:

  • High-temperature brake fluid: DOT 5.1 minimum
  • Performance brake pads: Better heat resistance
  • Fresh oil: Track days are hard on oil
  • Remove loose items: Floor mats, air fresheners, etc.

Personal Equipment

Requirements vary by organiser and vehicle type. Always check your booking confirmation.

Cars

  • Helmet: Minimum Snell SA2015 or ECE 22.05 (can often hire)
  • Clothing: Long sleeves and trousers (cotton preferred)
  • Footwear: Thin-soled shoes for better pedal feel
  • Gloves: Optional but recommended

Motorcycles

  • Helmet: ACU Gold or ECE 22.05 minimum
  • Leathers: One or two-piece with CE armor
  • Gloves: Full gauntlet style
  • Boots: Above ankle with protection
  • Back protector: If not built into leathers

Tools and Spares to Bring

Essential Tools

  • Tyre pressure gauge
  • Torque wrench
  • Basic socket set
  • Screwdrivers
  • Cable ties
  • Duct tape

Useful Spares

  • Engine oil (1-2 litres)
  • Brake fluid
  • Coolant
  • Spare bulbs
  • Fuses
  • Brake pads (if borderline)

  • Bring cash for food/fuel (card machines sometimes fail)
