Track Day Etiquette
Essential rules and best practices for safe circuit driving
Golden Rules
- It's not a race - No timing, no competition, no prizes
- Respect others - Everyone has paid to be there
- Be predictable - Sudden moves cause accidents
- Check mirrors - Frequently and especially before turning in
- Leave space - Don't tailgate or pressure others
Overtaking
Most UK track days are overtaking on ONE SIDE ONLY (usually the left)
- Only overtake on the designated side
- Make decisive passes with clear speed differential
- Give plenty of room when passing
- Don't overtake in corners unless very experienced
- If being overtaken, hold your line and don't fight it
Flag Signals
Flag | Meaning | Your Action |
---|---|---|
Yellow | Hazard ahead | Slow down, no overtaking |
Red | Session stopped | Slow right down, return to pits |
Black | Mechanical problem | Return to pits immediately |
Blue | Faster car behind | Let them pass safely |
Chequered | Session ended | Complete lap and return to pits |
Pit Lane & Paddock
- Strict speed limit (usually 10-15 mph)
- Be aware of pedestrians
- Don't block pit lane exit/entry
- Keep your pit area tidy
- Be considerate with noise in paddock
On Track Behavior
- Build speed gradually each session
- Cool-down lap before coming in
- Don't stop on track (unless emergency)
- If you spin, wait for clear track before rejoining
- Acknowledge mistakes with a wave
