Track Car Maintenance Between Events

Keep your car reliable and track-ready

Post-Track Day Inspection

Within 48 hours of returning home:

Visual Inspection

  • Check for fluid leaks under the car
  • Inspect tyres for unusual wear patterns
  • Look for damage to splitters, bumpers, or undertrays
  • Check brake discs for cracks or excessive scoring
  • Inspect wheel bearings for play

Fluids Check

  • Engine oil: Level and condition (should not smell burnt)
  • Coolant: Level and color
  • Brake fluid: Level and color (darker = needs changing)
  • Power steering: If applicable
  • Differential/gearbox: Check for leaks

Brake System Maintenance

After Every Track Day

  • Measure pad thickness (replace at 3-4mm)
  • Check disc thickness and run-out
  • Inspect for pad deposits or uneven wear
  • Bleed brakes if pedal feels soft

Brake Fluid

Track use degrades brake fluid quickly:

  • Change every 6-12 months for regular track use
  • Use high-temp fluid (DOT 5.1 minimum)
  • Consider racing fluid for heavy use
  • Always use fresh fluid from sealed containers

Engine Care

Oil Changes

  • Change oil after every 2-3 track days
  • Use high-quality fully synthetic
  • Consider higher viscosity for track use
  • Change filter every time

Cooling System

  • Flush coolant annually
  • Check radiator for debris/damage
  • Inspect hoses for soft spots
  • Consider upgraded radiator for frequent use

Suspension and Chassis

  • Check suspension bushings for wear
  • Inspect dampers for leaks
  • Verify alignment hasn't changed
  • Torque check all suspension bolts
  • Look for cracks in suspension components

Regular Service Schedule

Item Frequency Notes
Engine oil Every 2-3 track days Or 3,000 miles
Brake fluid 6-12 months More often with heavy use
Brake pads As needed Check after each event
Air filter Every 6 months More if dusty tracks
Spark plugs Annually Or per manufacturer
Coolant Annually Quality coolant only
Gearbox oil Every 20k miles Or 2 years

Upgrade Priorities

For reliability and performance:

  1. Brake pads and fluid: Most important upgrade
  2. Oil cooler: Prevents oil degradation
  3. Brake cooling ducts: Extends pad/disc life
  4. Upgraded radiator: Better cooling
  5. Baffled sump: Prevents oil starvation

Maintenance Tips

  • Keep a maintenance log
  • Buy quality parts
  • Don't skip services
  • Prevention is cheaper than repair
